| Lan-yu Storage Site status (April 2013) |
The Lan-Yu Storage Site provides off-site interim storage for solidified radioactive waste from 1982 to 1996. The site has stored 97,672 drums in total and has not received any radioactive waste since then. Because of the high temperature, moisture, and salty ambient atmosphere in Orchid Island, many drums stored on site for decades has shown paint scaling or rusted, some waste in drums even presents solification deformation.
Concerning the management safety of Lan-Yu Storage Site, AEC has requested TPC to implement the waste storage modification program for corroded on site waste drums since 2007. The program is scheduled to be complete in Sept. 2011.
